Salió a la venta el 29 de septiembre de 1966, para el año modelo 1967, y fue diseñado como modelo competidor del Ford Mustang. La primera generación del Camaro debutó sobre una nueva plataforma GM F-body de tracción trasera y estaría disponible en versiones de 2 puertas, 2+2 plazas, coupé o descapotable, con motores de 6 cilindros en línea de 250ci y V8 de 302ci, 307ci, 327ci, 350ci o 396ci.
